Ready for winter: Are you prepared?
While winter may still be a while away, now is the perfect time to evaluate your property's resilience and take proactive steps to reduce the effects of seasonal changes.
Two of the biggest risks during the winter months are severe weather, like storms and flooding (especially in the southern regions), and electrical fires (caused by heaters and the like).
Here are some proactive measures to safeguard your homes and possessions against potential damage:
- Your roof is exposed to the elements, and as such, it takes a beating from temperature fluctuations. Regularly maintaining your roof helps prevent any water leaks during rainy periods.
- Clear your gutters regularly to ensure proper water drainage from the roof.
- Deal with weak branches that could snap during strong winds that can cause damages to your property.
- Ensure roof tiles are not damaged or loose so they can withstand winter storms' powerful gusts and heavy rains.
As we depend more on electric appliances during the winter months, the risk of fires increases. Consider the following:
- Ensure you have a regularly serviced fire extinguisher at home if you do not already (remember that a specialised extinguisher is required for lithium batteries).
- Check cords and connections of heaters, electric blankets, etc, as they are common causes of electrical fires.
- Replace worn plugs and cords and take note if fuses or circuits frequently trip. While fuses are replaceable, recurring blown fuses or tripped circuits may indicate an underlying issue that requires investigation.
- Always double-check that all appliances are switched off before leaving the house as this is often the cause fires in many homes.
- Keep heating appliances at least a meter away from flammable materials and ensure they are switched off at the end of each day.
Taking proactive steps to maintain your home is essential to safeguarding both your property and your loved ones. Proper upkeep not only helps prevent damage but also ensures that your insurance coverage remains valid, avoiding potential claim issues due to lack of maintenance. By staying informed and prepared, you can confidently face the wetter months, knowing your home is well-protected against the elements.
